 The Upper Grammar SchoolŸ

The Upper  Grammar school serves grades 4 through 6.  Meeting weekly, this school is designed to compliment  and guide existing home-school programs.  The Master's Study focuses heavily on the elements of humane letters - history, literature, writing- and begins to expose students to other classical elements:  Latin, science, art, and music.  Students will see a noticeable increase in writing and reading demands for their assignments in the Upper Grammar School.

Upper Grammar 4,5, and 6 students travel to each of their five (5) 45-minute classes which include:

  • Sciencefocus on nature studies and exploration
  • Recitation with Dictation - development of early writing & oratory skills
  • Latin - introduction to Latin vocabulary, grammatical concepts, and derivatives
  • Art - development of  art technique, exploration of mediums, art concepts & history
  • Choir - including music appreciation,  and performance elements for 2 public performances annually.

In addition, the bulk of an upper grammar student's day focuses on the 90-minute humane letters class.  This class weaves together topics in history and her subsets, literature, and writing.  Literature choices are driven by the period of history under study.  Writing elements of the program use the exercises of the Progymnasmata.

All classes are staffed with a lead teacher;  classroom size is capped in order to maximize the student experience.  Families with fourth-grade age students might want to review the Upper Grammar Readiness guidelines to gage their student's readiness.  In addition, the transition from 4th to 5th grade is one to carefully evaluate as well.
